What separates a good install from a bad one
Transducer placement
The single decision that determines whether the unit holds bottom at speed. It has to sit in clean, undisturbed water for your specific hull — which is not the same spot on every boat, whatever the generic instructions say.
Clean power
Power run back toward the source rather than spliced into whatever wire was closest. Sonar sharing a circuit with pumps or the trolling motor is the usual cause of the screen interference people mistake for a faulty unit.
Mounting and cable routing
Head unit mounted so it is readable and reachable from where you actually stand, with cable routed and secured through the hull instead of left to rub against a bulkhead.

Why does my fish finder lose bottom when I get on plane?
Nearly always transducer placement. If it sits in aerated or turbulent water the return breaks up at speed and the unit has nothing to read. Moving it into clean water for your hull fixes what looks for all the world like a failing unit.
Can I add a second screen at the console or the bow?
Yes, and it is one of the most common upgrades. The things worth planning first are power capacity, whether the units need to share sonar and mapping over a network, and where the cable can physically run without being pinched.
What causes the interference lines across my sonar screen?
Usually electrical noise sharing a power path — bilge pumps, aerators, the trolling motor, or an unshielded cable run alongside a power wire. It reads like a hardware fault but it is a wiring layout problem.
Do you mount transducers on the transom or through the hull?
It depends on the hull and how you fish. Transom mounts suit most bass boats and are far less invasive; through-hull makes sense in specific cases. You get a recommendation for your boat rather than a default answer.
Will you install a unit I bought myself?
Yes. Bring the unit and the transducer and it gets installed properly. If something essential is missing from the box, you will hear about it before the work starts rather than halfway through.
